Lambda endorses Furutani for LA City Council

June Meeting Reschedule

LGBT group offers early endorsement to send LA Councilwoman to Congress

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn received the endorsement tonight of the Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club for her candidacy to fill the 36th Congressional seat that will soon be vacated by outgoing Rep. Jane Harman.

At the LGBT Democratic club’s general meeting held Tuesday night, the Councilwoman, whose 15th Council District represents all of San Pedro, Harbor City, the Alameda Corridor and part of Watts, was on hand to accept the endorsement in person at the First Congregational Church in Downtown Long Beach.

“We shouldn’t have to live in a (world) where we have to choose between good jobs and clean air,” Hahn said in her address to a packed room that included First District Councilmember Robert Garcia and former Councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga.

“This is the woman we need in Congress who will fight for the South Bay and keep alive the progress our city has made in the fight for marriage equality,” Garcia said. His sentiments expressed a main point of support from Long Beach’s only gay Democratic club. Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club is the first LGBT and first Democratic club to endorse in this race.

The club itself made the bold move to endorse Hahn’s candidacy over current California Secretary of State Debra Bowen. Bowen was invited to the meeting to seek the endorsement as well but an invitation from the club was not returned by her campaign.

The 36th Congressional district encompasses most of the South Bay including Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Torrance, El Segundo, Venice, Wilmington, and San Pedro. Gov. Jerry Brown will set the date of the special election 14 days after Harman retires.

Executive Board Nominations

As per the ByLaws that were adopted as amended Dec 2010, we will have an open nominations process for all elected board members from Dec 9, 2010 through Feb 8, 2011. If you wish to be a candidate, please fill out the form on the Nominations page of our website. Any current member of the club and registered Democrat is eligible to run. Elections will be held at our next General Meeting on February 22, 2011.

New ByLaws

In our General Meeting held Dec 8, we adopted amended ByLaws for the Club. We will get them posted to our website by the end of the week. We look forward to how these changes will modernize our club and give us the ability to adapt and stay current as we continue to expand and establish ourselves both in Long Beach but also as a chartered club of the California Democratic Party.

State Senate, SD 28 Special Election

We are proud to endorse Ted Lieu as the Democratic candidate for the special election of the State Senate SD 28 to replace former State Senator Jenny Oropeza who passed away shortly before the November election. The date of the election has not been set. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has 14 days from the date of the certification of the election to call the special election. The date of the special election will be 120 days or less from the date it was called. We expect it be in either February or early March.
